History of
The Hoff House
The Hoff House
Nestled in the heart of Lake Stockton, Missouri, The Hoff House is a
breathtaking Greek Revival estate steeped in history, character, and timeless
Southern elegance. Set on three private acres and surrounded by its own
secluded forest, this pre–Civil War landmark is the oldest home in Cedar
County—an enduring symbol of resilience and beauty for more than 170
years.
Originally owned by the prominent Hoff Family—newspaper publishers,
congressmen, lawyers, and Union Civil War veterans—the home has
witnessed some of Missouri’s most defining moments. During the Civil War,
Union generals occupied the property while many neighboring homes were
lost in the Kansas–Missouri border conflicts to infamous “bushwhackers.”
Through each era, The Hoff House remained a pillar of strength, passing
through only four families across nearly two centuries.
After the devastating 2003 tornado that reshaped much of the town, the
estate was lovingly restored and thoughtfully reimagined. Its newly imagined
Greek Revival exterior features custom-made Louisiana columns inspired by l
1850s architecture. Inside, hand-hewn beams stretch across the ceilings,
blending rustic craftsmanship with refined European style. Every room
reflects curated elegance: custom Swedish wallpapers, 19th-century Italian
and French antiques, silver serving trays gathered from storied New Orleans
estates, and dining chairs sourced directly from the French Quarter.
Today, The Hoff House offers couples an unparalleled wedding setting—
romantic, historic, intimate, and uniquely glamorous. With its rich heritage,
enchanting surroundings, and timeless design, it provides the perfect
backdrop for celebrations that feel as meaningful and unforgettable as the
history held within its walls.
